This is a project I worked on for my natural language processing class. I took a few of fyodor dostoevsky’s works in the public domain from the gutenberg project and processed them using N-Grams as an approach to sentence generation. The idea was to probabilistically replicate his prose style, creating sentences that sound like dostoevsky, but that he’s never actually written. I also made a modified program that generates a highly cryptic and mostly meaningless daily horoscope in the style of dostoevsky. I’m working on doing an embedding into the homepage of the site, which should be extremely funny. Look out for that, but here’s a sample:
you are sure to cry up your mind works , yet i must say that he looked morose , as though spat upon .
today is a man to be done entrusted to mitya that evening was coming .
you will only summarize the gist of it , i would not give the enclosed sealed letter to you was your sister can’t endure me , as he had come to light , and i am going to sleep in peace and honour .
everything is a vindictive light in his place , at moments he would meet me ; how should you get him in the world , and a black silk dress and white to look into your mean soul .
Anyway This was a really cool project. Code attached in case anyone’s wondering, or wants to run it on a language corpus of your choice.
These are some highlights.
“the last exhibition fell to the ground ,’ wherever i may be shameless , but you have not remarked everything else in her which he could not have foreseen .”
“his continual mobility , his turning and twisting , made him repeat the story over and over again to impress it on his neck .”
“but how can i have excited your curiosity , living as good people live , i should know him !”
“he knows it and yet asks for guarantees .”
“but you have wounded me , do not know how to get on with people fairly successfully .”
“as if she could put up with any mockery rather than pretend that i am not ready !”
“he puts himself forward where he is standing now , and no one loved me and i shall never forget an incident with a very long time to wait. she ended suddenly.”
“where can you take that in ?” the prince finished her speech for her with the axe in the blood”
“she’s yours . i will take a roll of papers .”
“i will not hinder the pleasures of family intimacy , and to rack his brains for spite , if he could ?”
“and what a heart !”
“but this subject will be treated in the next flat .”
“i swear before god that i don’t think he requires a napkin under his chin at lunch .”
“many times i’ve seen in your face , and tears trickled from his eyes ; at the same time try to ingratiate yourself in our good opinion .”
“why , he told me to thank you , thank you , and i hit him again and he had not seen it and picked it up and ran”
“my heart is sad , my heart sinks ; if you have a lot of them there — at the station ? — not at all .”
“notice that the songs had ceased , but the loveliness weighed upon me .”
